An article teaches you how to build a Mesh network to achieve full house WiFi coverage!

Mesh networking uses multiple compatible routers connected wirelessly or via Ethernet to extend whole-home WiFi coverage and improve network stability, flexibility, and user experience.

When residential spaces are large, wall structures are complex, or multiple floors need to be covered, traditional single routers often struggle to provide stable and comprehensive wireless networks. The weak WiFi signal, blind spots in coverage, and significant differences in network speed between different rooms can all affect the daily user experience. The emergence of Mesh networks provides a more flexible and stable solution for whole house WiFi coverage. It can work collaboratively with multiple nodes to extend network signal coverage to more areas and maintain stable connectivity as much as possible when devices move. This article will introduce the basic concepts and main advantages of Mesh networks, as well as how to achieve networking through both wireless and wired methods.

Mesh network is a wireless network topology structure. Its core feature is that devices can be connected to each other and communicate directly, forming a decentralized network. In the Mesh network, all devices can be connected to the Internet, and data can be transmitted through routes between multiple nodes, so better coverage and higher stability can be achieved. Compared to relying on a single router to transmit signals, Mesh networks are more like coverage systems composed of multiple nodes, each of which can participate in data transmission and network expansion.

Compared to traditional router networks, Mesh networks have multiple advantages. It can expand coverage by adding nodes, and can also flexibly expand according to actual space and network load. Due to the fact that data can be transmitted through multiple paths, Mesh networks typically improve transmission speed and overall performance. Each node can communicate with other nodes, which also enables the network to have higher reliability and stability in the face of individual node failures or signal changes. At the same time, Mesh networks support multiple encryption protocols and security measures, which help protect data transmission security. Users can also customize settings through various configuration options based on different network requirements and application scenarios.

When building a Mesh network, common methods include wireless networking and wired networking. Wireless networking is a WiFi connection between the main router and sub routers, and the placement of routers is not limited by wiring. Therefore, it is more flexible than wired Mesh networking and easier to maintain indoor aesthetics. Wired networking refers to the connection between the main router and sub routers through Ethernet cables. Compared to wireless Mesh networking, wired networking is usually more stable.

If you choose wireless networking, you first need to configure the main router, which is basically the same as a regular router, and ensure that the main router can connect to the internet normally after being powered on. Subsequently, enable the Mesh networking function in the settings, or press and hold the MESH/WPS key on the main router. When the Mesh light flashes, it indicates that the networking function has been enabled. Next, plug in the sub router and power it on, and restore it to factory settings. Usually, press and hold the RESET or DEFAULT button on the router for about five to ten seconds to complete the restoration. Wait for the sub router to restart, which will take about two minutes. Then press the MESH/WPS keys for both the main and sub routers at the same time, and the network lights for both the main and sub routers will start flashing simultaneously. Continue to wait for about three minutes. When the network light of the sub router remains on, it means that the networking is successful.

If wired networking is chosen, the first few steps are the same as wireless networking. First, configure the main router and ensure that it can access the internet normally. Then, enable the Mesh networking function, or press and hold the MESH/WPS button on the main router. When the Mesh light flashes, it indicates that the function is enabled. Then plug in the sub router, power it on, and restore it to factory settings. Press and hold the RESET or DEFAULT button for about five to ten seconds. After completing these operations, use a network cable to connect the WAN port of the sub router to the LAN port of the main router, and wait for the network and WAN port lights of the router to light up, indicating successful networking.

Before building a Mesh network, it is necessary to confirm that there are at least two or more routers that support Mesh networks, and routers from different brands usually cannot mesh with each other. It is recommended to purchase the latest router model from the same brand. Currently, most WiFi 6 series products support Mesh networks, such as Netgear, Linksys, TP Link, Asus, and other brands that have excellent Mesh router kits. When setting up, it is best to first complete the Mesh networking near the main router. After the networking is successful, place the sub routers in the locations where network coverage needs to be improved.

Overall, Mesh network is a decentralized wireless network topology structure with characteristics such as wide coverage, flexible expansion, and high stability, which can provide more powerful and stable wireless networks for homes and multi space environments. Nowadays, many households have adopted Mesh networking to improve the whole house WiFi experience. If you also want to enhance the coverage and performance of your existing network, you may want to try building your own Mesh network.
